or a Yemen, Bali's isolation kept its culture whole. Like the revolution against the czar in Russia or against the redcoats in America, the myth of the Majapahit conquest became the origin tale by which subsequent Balinese dynasties justified their rule. Before Majapahit there was only barbarism. indeed, the Majapahit invasion is considered a great watershed in Balinese history because it marked the metamorphosis from the crude, Polynesian-style animism of ancient Bali and the development of the elegant, distinct, classical Balinese civilization.

The Decline Of The Majapshit Empire (Circa 1520)
Civil wars, revolts, and internal decay; spread in Majapahit's colonies, and soon the great empire went into decline. Muslim missionaries were becoming influential in Java and were converting princes who, declaring themselves sultans of their districts, repudiated their allegiance to Majapahit. This gradual Islamization quickened the pace of deterioration within Majapahit and soon peaceful religious propaganda turned to armed force. When the empire at last crumbled under the military and economic invasion of Islam at the start of the 16th century, there began a migration of the cream of Majapahit's scholars, jurists, dancers, craftsmen, intellectuals, and literati to parts of East Java and Bali. To these last remaining Hindu colonies of Majapahit, priests took with them all their sacred books and historical records. Because of the lack of good harbors and the small volume of trade, Islam had never succeeded in taking a firm hold in the coastal areas of Bali. Only in Bali's extreme west, in Jembrana, did part of the population accept Islam.
Over the year, while their descendants consolidated thier power on the island, the Bali-Hindu religion and a standard of civilization like nowhere else in the archipelago evolved. The islands culture took on more and more of a Balinized character. Only the Bali Aga (Mountain Balinese) resisted the Bali-Hindu inroads. Java's easternmost parts remained Hinduistic until the end of the 16th century; the Blambangan region in far eastern Java lost its independence only during the 17th century. Bali, still farther away and determined to keep to her way of life, became the last refuge of Hindu culture in Asia a splendid historical mutation.

in Bali we must point out a very important distinction which the Balinese make between two clearly separate groups of ancestors. The first of these groups consists of the dead who are riot yet completely purified. This group is in turn subdivided in pirata, those riot yet cremated, and pitara, those already cremated. The former are still completely impure; the latter have been purified, but are still considered as distinct, individual souls. The second group consists of the completely purified ancestors who are considered as divine.
No contact is sought with the pirata, the dead who have not yet been cremated. Oil the contrary they are dangerous, Offerings must however be made for the redemption of their souls.
