PARE PARE

A port 55 km north of Ujung Pandang. stay: Cheapest beds are at Pang. Murni, Rp500, close to the bus company and shipping offices; upstairs is breezier and quieter. Refresh yourself in the cake and ice juice shop on the opposite corner. Big, rambling, dark Hotel Siswa, JI. Patompo, is Rp1750. eat: Good mie kua places are on JI. Lasinrang. On the same street is a fruit market. Restaurant Asia is a fancy priced rip-off (horrible chicken in tomato sauce). Warung Merennu, Jl. Hasanudin, has good soups and gado2, Rp200. Sampurna, JI. Bau Massepe, also is a bargain place. A floating restaurant (specializing in seafood of course) is Angin Mamiri on JI. Pingir Laut right over the sea. from Pare Pare: Buses from Pare Pare leave for Polewali north, Rp600, 3 hours; Rantepao in the highlands, Rp850, a half day trip. To Ujung Pandang it's faster to take the bus, Rp1150, rather than the boat. There are at least 4 shipping companies based in Pare Pare: Berita, Cahaya, Watampone, Tanjung Manis. All have daily boats (except Fri.) to the east coast of Kalimantan. Some boats travel all the way to Jambi, South Sumatra, twice monthly, Rp 20,200. Before embarking for anywhere you'll have to clear with the customs police in the Pare Pare docks, but all they actually want to do is to meet you for their own entertainment; perhaps mutual. vicinity of Pare Pare: Pallengo is a small shipbuilding town on stilts 20 km south of Pare Pare. Have a small but fine prahu lone masted with one triangular sail) built here. In Bone the boats are much larger but roughly built.

in Bali we must point out a very important distinction which the Balinese make between two clearly separate groups of ancestors. The first of these groups consists of the dead who are riot yet completely purified. This group is in turn subdivided in pirata, those riot yet cremated, and pitara, those already cremated. The former are still completely impure; the latter have been purified, but are still considered as distinct, individual souls. The second group consists of the completely purified ancestors who are considered as divine.
No contact is sought with the pirata, the dead who have not yet been cremated. Oil the contrary they are dangerous, Offerings must however be made for the redemption of their souls.
