Hearing the Voices of the Poor: Encouraging Good Governance and Poverty Reduction through Media Sector Support
by Dr. Ann Hudock

World Learning for International Development (WLID), based in Washington, DC specializes in developing the skills and potential of individuals, institutions, and communities in all regions of the world. Building on World Learning's reputation as a leader in multicultural education and training, WLID's activities include facilitation of effective NGO management, democratic participation, community involvement in education, improved quality and equity in education programs, journalism and media, and social advocacy. Throughout all its development activities, WLID maintains a focus on gender and promotes the participation of women in project design and implementation.

World Learning for International Development oversees development projects in virtually every region of the world. Its current programs address five broad areas:

  • Democracy and Governance--strengthening the ability of individuals and civic groups to contribute to civil society and effective governance
  • Education--ensuring that communities, schools and teachers have the knowledge, resources, tools, and technology to facilitate effective instruction and create learning opportunities for all children
  • Training and Exchange--developing an individual's knowledge, skills, and attitudes as instruments for personal growth and improved performance
  • Institutional Capacity Building--contributing to the effectiveness of community-based groups through targeted technical assistance, training, and support
  • Societies in Transition--helping post-crisis communities build the foundation for sustainable social and economic development

World Learning for International Development works closely with the academic, study abroad, and other training programs of World Learning's School for International Training (SIT). World Learning includes the assets of both an international non-governmental organization and an institution of higher education. Thus, the organization is uniquely positioned to address both the theory and practice of social and economic development.
