Heavy rain has hit the Rhone valley in southern France over the past day or so. At Orange, some 70 miles north of Marseille, 174mm of rain has fallen in the 30 hour period to 1200 GMT Tuesday. This easily beats the average in the area of around 159mm. Flash flooding has been reported in the area.

Low pressure, centred to the west of Iberia and France has resulted in warm being advected northwards over central Europe. At Vaduz, capital of the small principality of Liechtenstein, the temperature reached 20.1 Celsius by midday on Tuesday, some 17 Celsius above the December average of 3 Celsius.

Heavy rains at Malacca, situated on the west coast of the Malay peninsula, some 150 miles northwest of Singapore have resulted in 94mm of rain falling in the 54 hour period to 1200 GMT Tuesday. This is well over half the monthly average of 165mm.

Port Headland is a small coastal town in the far northwest of Western Australia. On Tuesday the mercury peaked at 41.9 Celsius, nearly 8 degrees above the average of 34 Celsius. 100 miles further inland at Marble bar, it was even hotter at 44.5 Celsius, 5 degrees above the average.

Curacao is an island, part of the Netherlands Antilles, of the coast of Venezuela. 85mm of rain fell at the airport in the 24 hour period to 1200 GMT Tuesday, just short of the average of 99mm.
