One
option was to emphasize the birth anniversary of Madera himself, a perpetuation
of' his life-time celebrations now treated as a major temple festival (odalan),
not for the origin day of the temple, but for the origin day of the principal
ancestral spirit enshrined there. Other expenses included repairs on both
the house temple and another shrine supported by the subhouse situated at
a banyan tree growing oil a barren knoll, parched in the dry season. Yet
at the tree's base were two small fissures said to be filled perpetually
with crystal clear water; here Madera had erected a simple shrine. In 1972,
after twenty years of neglect, the temple was restored at considerable cost.
Some kinsmen doubted the benefits of this investment in an old shrine isolated
amidst unproductive coconut groves that would probably soon be sold.
Such were the varied fronts - economic, legal, ceremonial - on which Madera's descendants moved to regain past advantages. The legal measures enjoyed the support of the appropriate Market side East professional resources: advice by, ail expert in the district and provincial bureaucracy, recommendations by an agricultural officer in Jakarta, and suggestions on court matters s by a Tabanan judge - all kinsmen. In this respect then, it was a united ancestor-group effort. However, these procedures, especially the ceremonial elaborations, placed a strain on collateral relations by providing renewed occasions to think over past differences and breached loyalties.

we must point out a very important distinction which the Balinese make between
two clearly separate groups of ancestors. The first of these groups consists
of the dead who are riot yet completely purified. This group is in turn subdivided
in pirata, those riot yet cremated, and pitara, those already cremated. The
former are still completely impure; the latter have been purified, but are still
considered as distinct, individual souls. The second group consists of the completely
purified ancestors who are considered as divine. Everything Bali Indonesia |
