FACTORS TO TAKE INTO ACCOUNT WHEN PLANNING A TEAM-BUILD

Info about diving in South Africa. Includes a reference to many interesting web resources. An essential part of planning your visit to South Africa.

BUFFALO RIVER RAFTING

The Buffalo River winds itself for 19km through private game farms on the one side of the river and on the other, the Northern border of Zululand, real Africa as it once was. You are assured of seeing plenty of wild life and there is abundant bird life.

Two man inflatable rafts are used, which give you full control. On these you can be assured of an exhilarating ride as you paddle down the river.
The section that we will tackle is 13 km long and has a few flat sections as well as no fewer than 21 rapids. The entire section is grade 3 or less.
Included in the tour is an awesome optional abseil down the side of a cliff and a natural 40 metre bum-slide.

Your guides will paddle with you in kayaks alongside the rafts explaining each rapid and guiding you through. The main guide Craig van Heerden has been guiding for eight years locally and internationally, and is part of the South African rafting team. They have competed in the World champs on the Zambezi River and hope to be able to get to the next World champs in Nepal. Craig has worked on 13 different commercial rafting rivers in his paddling career and has no doubt that the Buffalo river is one of the best commercial sections available.

Accommodation Options include the top Isibindi Lodge for smaller groups or the Elandskraal self catering chalets which are nestled in the valley and are situated close to the rafting entry and exit points.

The team-build can involve either 2 days of rafting or 1 day of rafting and 1 day of teambuilding and orienteering activities.

Typical itinerary:

Day 1

Arrive at about 12H00: Settle into our accommodation. After breakfast we split into teams and complete a number of fun teambuilding events including:

Basic leadership

A basic course in leadership, which involves problem solving as a group. Team members all take a turn at leading the team through a series of 5 fun obstacles including the infamous spider's web and construction challenge.

Working as a team

Exercises are designed to ensure cohesiveness amongst team members. Only close teamwork will get the team through the next 5 activities.

Orienteering

Ever wondered where you are going? Work as a team to find out as the group take on an orienteering route on top quality GIANT mountain bikes. GPS, maps and compasses are provided.

Teams are subject to a pre and post assessment which is prepared by our professional facilitators after the weekend. The assessment is designed to assist the company with :· identifying issues in the company which need to be addressed.· suggest ways in which to address team issues.

The day's events are aimed at increasing team participation and encouraging leadership skills.

Dinner is a prawn feast (eat as much as you like), served with rice and a green salad, served around an open fire under the stars. A chicken and vegetarian dish will also be available. Our evening's entertainment is Beach and Bush's famous 'murder dinner' held around the campfire. Our guides set the scene and it's up to the groups to figure out 'who-dunnit'.

Day 2

We wake early and head down into the valley. A hearty and healthy breakfast, tea and coffee are prepared and served on the banks of the river.

Before we take on the river, we are taken through a thorough technique and safety briefing. We get to know the rafts and how they perform under expert guidance while navigating 19 different rapids with such names as "Nappy Rapid", "Heavens Gates", "Big Brother'' and "Stone-fish".

The days rafting stops for an hour's lunch on a deserted beach. With renewed strength take on the more exciting rapids, "long-drop", "tombstone" and rocky horror"'.

After 19km of river we arrive at the waiting 4x4s where cold beers reward us for our hard work. We then head back to camp.

Dinner is a team pooitjie compo followed by a party.
