USUN PRESS RELEASE # 161 (03)

October 7, 2003

CHECK AGAINST DELIVERY

Statement By Ambassador Sichan Siv, United States Representative to the Economic and Social Council, in General Debate in the Second Committee of the General Assembly, October 7, 2003

Mr. Chairman,

In the spirit of United Nations reform and General Assembly Resolution 57/270B -- which called for a better focus on the work of the Second Committee -- the United States delegation has decided not to make a statement during this General Debate.   Instead, we will focus our attention and offer our views on the important questions before us at the appropriate moments.  We believe that focusing our time and energy in this manner will provide for a more productive discussion.  It will streamline the work of the Committee and also align our activities with the priorities defined in the Millennium Declaration and the global conferences of the past decade.

Thank you, Mr.Chairman.
