 Musee d’Archeologie Pointe-a-Calliere
The exhibits in this imposing, shiplike building near the Pointe- a-Calliere park take you right to the foundations of New France - the museum is built over the excavated remains around the excavated remains of the original settlement of Montreal. Visits start with an audio-visual show that gives an overview of the area's history from the Ice Age to the present. Then you descend deep below street level to the bank of the Riviere St-Pierre that once flowed past the site and was where the first settlers built their homes and traded with the local natives. One of the most impressive archaeological finds was the city's first Catholic cemetery. From there, you wander through the stone foundations of an 18th- century tavern and a 19th-century insurance building. Filmed figures from the past appear on ghostly screens.
