For the last 38 years my work has been almost entirely on 35mm colour transparencies and I now have a collection of over 10,000 pictures. In recent years I have concentrated on waterways photography and have had over 100 pictures published. At present I am using A Minolta Dynax 9xi and a Minolta Dynax 8000i and record full exposure and lens details for each shot using the data cards that are part of the Dynax system. The most recent 2,000 shots are recorded on a database and cross referenced to the place and/or waterway photographed.
If you would like to sample some of my canal and river photographs please see my Gallery or for non-waterway pictures see my photography web site at www.jim-shead.net
My first published article was The Neath and Tennant Canals published in Waterways World in October 1992. Since then I have written a number of articles for waterways publications, including Waterways World and Canal & Riverboat (see my articles list). I have also written a monthly page in Waterways World called Clicking on Canals which looks at the hundreds of waterways websites available on the internet. I am willing to undertake commissions to write books or articles on the following subjects:-
Web Publishing
Over the years I have built up a mass of information about rivers and canals, much of it in the form of books and documents but increasingly on a database. A large proportion of my database information is now available on this website and offers an on-line resource for writers and publishers researching UK inland waterways subjects. The site is valuable not only for the enormous amount of data that it holds (a waterways encyclopedia) but also for the links it provides to hundreds of other waterway sites.
