Route chosen for £150m link canal

The 20-mile canal is expected to boost tourism in the area
The route for the new £150m branch of the Grand Union Canal has been announced by British Waterways.

The canal, the first new waterway for a century, will link the River Great Ouse at Bedford with the Grand Union Canal at Milton Keynes.

A report says the 20-mile canal will boost tourism in the area and be of benefit to wildlife.

The new waterway will start from Woolstone and cross the M1 motorway north of junction 13.

The route of the canal is the longest and most expensive of the nine variations orginally announced by the canal company.

It could however have an architectural feature which could rival the seven wonders of the world - a huge see-through glass aquaduct which would straddle the M1.

As well as creating a new cruising ring connecting the canal network to the East Anglian river system, British Waterways says that the project will attract 1.25 million new visitors and generate £7m a year for the local economy.

The canal will mean another 500 permanent jobs and provide an important new leisure resource for all sectors of the community
