Education Assistance to Burmese Refugees Program

Through its long time association with the Consortium, partners World Learning and World Education are conducting educational activities in support of Burmese refugee educators in camps along the Thai-Burmese border. The program's objective is to provide educational support and assistance for Burmese refugee educators who will develop skills and knowledge that can be used to implement an effective education system upon their return to Burma. Under Phase I, educat-ion and training programs were implemented in Mae La, Nupo, and Umphiem refugee camps in Tak Province, as well as in three camps in Mae Hong Son Province. Under Phase II, five additional camps are receiving assistance.

From its inception, the Education Assistance to Burmese Refugees Program addressed the need to prepare teachers and principals for teaching upon their eventual return to Burma as well as offer in-service training for teachers working in the camps, and to develop and produce appropriate reading and education materials for children. In July 2000, the Program was extended to conclude in late 2002. The new funding allowed for the addition of special needs education, science teaching, and materials, a teachers' preparatory course, and adult literacy. This project draws on and combines World Learning's expertise in community-based education and societies in transition. The refugee camps are home to the displaced Burmese and thus need to provide basic education and support services to ensure academic and vocational training for a transient population of learners. World Learning's approach provides an education system characterized by the quality of education professionals and resources that typically are found in more stable education settings. The approach recognizes the humanity of the refugee population and the importance of preparing them for their new lives and sustainable livelihoods upon repatriation or resettlement.
