World Learning's Capability in Societies in TransitionIn countries recovering from the impacts of war, social upheaval, and natural disaster, World Learning has proven effective at helping societies emerge from crisis and begin the difficult road toward sustainable development. Working from the grassroots and involving citizens and civil society organizations, World Learning for International Development designs and implements rapid-response activities that address the most immediate concerns of a post-crisis society - from the demobilization of combatants to the establishment of functioning educational facilities, to the creation of organizations to provide critical social services.Preventing the reoccurrence of conflict: World Learning enables individuals who have endured social crises and conflicts to participate in cross-border exchanges, where they work closely with others to share ways of resolving ongoing threats to peace and stability. Participants bring varying perspectives to understanding the nature and causes of conflict. Regenerating civil society: World Learning works with citizens and civil society organizations to prepare them to participate fully in political and economic decision-making. Activities incorporate the media, schools, unions, and other nongovernmental groups as agents for positive change. Empowering disenfranchised groups: Recognizing that vulnerable populations such as women, youth, and ethnic minorities are neglected and frequently exploited in post-crisis situations, World Learning ensures that these groups are fully integrated into development activities. The result is reconciliation and cooperation among former adversaries who work together to encourage a better future for all. The PDF document is in Adobe's Portable Document Format (PDF).
