Knowledge of the weather is essential to the safety and enjoyment of anyone involved in leisure and sports activities on UK waters - including yachting and boating enthusiasts, surfers, windsurfers, jetskiers, divers and sea anglers.

The Met Office offers you an extra pair of hands on deck with services for mariners via phone, fax, web and mobile - you can even talk to a Met Office forecaster direct. There are many forecast services provided free of charge, via this web site.

FREE Marine Weather Services Booklet 2003

Your first port of call
You can now pre-order the 2003 Marine Weather Services booklet online. It contains a whole range of useful information to help you plan and make the most of your trip. The booklet contains all the latest information about Met Office products and services including MetFAX, MetWEB and mobile phone services. It also offers the latest initiatives from The Maritime and Coastguard Agency as well as covering sea safety issues. You can order your free booklet online or call our 24-hour Customer Centre.

Shipping forecast

Prepared four times a day for broadcast on BBC Radio 4 at 0048, 0535, 1201 and 1754. All broadcasts are on LW on 1515 m (198 kHz), with some also on VHF (FM). They include a summary of gale warnings in force, a general synopsis, area forecasts, and coastal weather reports. Remember that the new shipping area FitzRoy came into effect on 4 February 2002.
