Travelling to Exeter

The following information will be updated on a regular basis as local roadworks are completed and new bus routes are introduced.

Our staff, customers and visitors are encouraged to use environmentally sustainable means of travel to visit Met Office locations.

By road
By road

From the north.

  • Leave at junction 29 of the M5 motorway
  • turn right at the end of the motorway slip road and go straight across the first roundabout
  • take the second turning on the right into FitzRoy Road
  • follow the road around the Met Office building.

From the south and west.

  • Leave at junction 29 of the M5 motorway
  • turn right at the end of the motorway slip road and go straight across the first roundabout
  • take the second turning on the right into FitzRoy Road
  • follow the road around the Met Office building.

From the east.

  • follow the A30 under the M5
  • go straight across the first roundabout
  • take the second turning on the right into FitzRoy Road
  • follow the road around the Met Office building.
By bus
By bus and coach

The Park and Ride (PR2) provides a regular, quick route from Exeter city centre every 12 minutes.

From Exeter St Davids railway station, the H1 bus service takes 40 minutes to the Met Office site. Service B operates from Pinhoe railway station.

All of these services call at a bus stop on the Met Office site.

The stations closest to the Met Office site are Pinhoe station to the north and Digby & Sowton station to the south. We are negotioating bus services linking these stations with the new site. See By Bus and Walking/Cycling sections.

Pinhoe can be reached from Waterloo from the east or Exeter St Davids from the west and south. It is possible to travel direct to Digby & Sowton without changing trains from stations on the Paignton line.

Exeter has two main line stations: Exeter St David's, the hub of Devon's rail network, and Exeter Central. Frequent direct services operate between Paddington and Waterloo stations in London. A typical journey from London to Exeter takes as little as 2 hours 15 minutes, and from the Midlands as little as 2 hours 30 minutes.   • follow the A30 and the road signs towards Exeter city centre
  • after going under the M5, go straight across the first roundabout
  • take the second turning on the right in FitzRoy Road
  • follow the road around the Met Office building

New pedestrian/cycle links with safe crossing facilities are being provided from the Met Office site to Honiton Road and Hill Barton Road (adjacent to the site), and to Honiton Road Park and Ride public transport interchange.

Typical walking times and distances from the Met Office site are:

  • to Honiton Road Park and Ride: 3 minutes
  • to Pinhoe Station: 18 minutes (1.5km)
  • to Digby and Sowton Station: 25 minutes (2km)
