The Romanesque Gothic brick construction was built in the late 13thth century and modified in the 15th century. In April 2002 it reopened after a two-year restoration. The light and airy interior boasts a well preserved ship's-keel ceiling, beautifully carved confessionals and 15th century paintings, of note is Giuseppe Porta Salviati's ‘Baptism of Christ with Mary Magdalen and St. Catherine.’ The church houses a late 14th century statue of the Enthroned Madonna, brought here in 1988 from the nearby abandoned island of San Giacomo in Paludo. The Gothic campanile, or bell tower, topped by a cupola, was built in 1318 and contains a bell from the same time, making it one of the oldest in Europe. Locals say that the magnetic waves released by the pealing bell keep them dry by sending thunderstorms packing.
