November 7 - May 2, 2004, the Guggenheim Hermitage Museum will host another spectacular exhibit -
A Century of Painting: From Renoir to Rothko.
Showcasing
a collection of some of the Guggenheim's most beloved works from the
19th and 20th centuries,
A Century of Painting: From Renoir to Rothko includes original paintings
by Cézanne, Chagall, Gauguin, Kandinsky, Kokoschka, Matisse,
Miró, Modigliani, Monet, Picasso, Pollock, Renoir, Rothko, van
Gogh, and others - all so close you can see the brushstrokes.
The exhibition explores the diversity and complexity of painting from
the end of the 19th century
to the decades following World War II, demonstrating how artists
of this period challenged and rejected traditional conventions. By uniting
major artists and developments,
A Century of Paining: From Renoir to Rothko emphasizes how the
use of broken brushstrokes, vibrant color, and modern-life subject matter
led to movements such as Cubism, Futurism, Expressionism, and Abstract
Expressionism, and helped create a new visual language for a new century.
