The SIT Counseling Services Mission
School for International Training (SIT) recognizes
that the demands of academic programs as well as issues of a personal
nature may lead students to seek assistance in coping with challenges
they face. In order to serve the needs of students, there are a variety
of services available on campus, including the SIT Counseling Office.
The mission of SIT Counseling Services is to provide a broad range of
mental health and support services that assist students in participating
fully and effectively in the SIT community. When appropriate, support
is offered in partnership with other resource persons within SIT and
through referral to providers within the Brattleboro area. Counseling
is based on a collaborative approach between counselor and client, taking
into consideration the diverse needs of persons from varied cultures,
backgrounds, identities, and interests.
Counseling philosophy
In keeping with SIT's holistic approach to student
development, the Counseling Office considers each student to be an individual
with universal human needs but also unique physical, emotional, intellectual,
spiritual, and social/ cultural dimensions. Counseling is based on a
philosophy which encourages students to take responsibility for their
own wellness, but also acknowledges that in times of difficulty, people
can benefit from extra support. Counseling does not impose any particular
treatment method, but rather works with the individual's own goals,
values, and world view. Counseling also emphasizes preventative measures,
such as stress management, an approach that focuses on health rather
than pathology.
