The Village has been working with the Corps of Engineers to resolve the issue of the erosion on South Beach. The progress to date has been slow but we have the following to report to the property owners. Over three hundred (300) sandbags have been placed along the South Beach area where the erosion has come within twenty feet (20') of South Bald Head Wynd. The bags are the first step in trying to control the erosion caused by the alignment of the new channel. The next step is to have sand placed in front of the sandbags. We received a letter from the Corps in April stating that they have agreed that Bald Head should receive the sand from the dredging of the channel in November. However, the Corps will not place the sand where the Village wants it on South Beach unless we agree to install soft groins to assist in holding the sand so that it does not return to the channel. The Village has agreed to install the soft groin system as a temporary solution until a permanent navigational related structure, such as a rock groin, can be installed to prevent the channel from re-shoaling as the soft groins deteriorate.
