USAID deployed a Disaster Assistance Response Team (DART) to Iran to help with recovery efforts after the earthquake in Kerman Province in the southeastern region of the country.

Recent Interviews
Secretary Powell recently discussed several current issues during an interview on the Michael Reagan Radio Show. The issues discussed included Iraq, the capture of Saddam Hussein, weapons of mass destruction, and the Secretary's health. Secretary Powell also was interviewed by Lou Dobbs of CNN.

The Bureau of Democracy, Human Rights, and Labor, with the Bureau of Public Affairs, released The Dream Deferred: Fear and Freedom in Fidel's Cuba, addressing the four freedoms that the Cuban people still dream of.

Alyson McFarland, a program development officer with the State Department, received a Service to America award for her work in handling a crisis in Shenyang, China, when three North Korean refugees sought political asylum at the U.S. Consulate.
In Other News
The United States has contributed an initial $75 million to the UN High Commissioner for Refugees.

Three new fact sheets explain U.S.-Haiti policies: assistance to Haiti; deterring illegal migration; and Haiti and International Financial Institutions.

The Bureau of Democracy, Human Rights, and Labor, working with the Bureau of Public Affairs, released Mass Graves of Iraq: Uncovering Atrocities.


The International Religious Freedom Report was released on Dec. 18, 2003.

The Secretary of State redesignates two groups as Foreign Terrorist Organizations: Jaish e-Mohammed and Lashkar e-Tayyiba.

The Department is a sponsor of the 2004 Doors to Diplomacy student contest. This educational award will recognize the student-created Global SchoolNet Web project that best teaches others about the importance of international affairs and diplomacy. Check it out!
