Personal Calling Card Usage
Personal calling cards may be used for nonofficial long-distance calls by using the following procedures:
Accessing AT&T From a Department of State Telephone
Dial 9+10288+0. A voice will say "AT&T" and will guide
you through a series of voice prompts to complete your call. At any
point in this call, you can enter V to speak to a live operator. Alternatively,
you can dial 9+11+800225-5288 (1-800-CALL-ATT). A voice will say "AT&T"
and will direct you through a series of voice prompts to complete your
call. Note: When asked to enter a telephone number, enter only the area
code and seven-digit telephone number, e.g., 201-555-1212. Again, live
operator assistance is available by pressing "0." 1-800-225-5288
will also work from public telephones with either an AT&T Federal
calling card or a personal AT&T calling card.
Accessing MCI From a Department of State Telephone
Dial 9+0+ the telephone number you wish to reach. A voice will say "MCI,,
and guide you through a series of voice prompts to complete your call.
You can enter V to speak to a live operator at any time. If you wish
to reach a live operator directly, dial 9+0+0. An MCI operator will
answer and will assist you with your call.
Accessing Sprint From a Department of State Telephone
D ial 9+101033+0. A Sprint operator will answer and will assist you
with your call. Alternatively, you can dial 9+1+800877-8000. When you
hear a computer tone, enter V+ the number you wish to reach, e.g., 0-201-555-1212.
After you hear a short computer tone, enter your Sprint calling card
number. To speak to a live operator, press "0" after the first
computer tone. 1-800-8778000 will also work from public telephones with
Sprint calling cards.
Accessing Other Long-Distance Carriers From a Department of State Telephone
very long-distance carrier has a carrier ID code in the format of 10XXX0,
where the XXX uniquely identifies that company. For example, AT&T's
carrier ID code is 102880; MCI's is 102220; and Sprint's is 101033.
Call the long-distance company you wish to use and ask them for their
code and instructions on how to use it. They may also have an "800"
number you can use from either the Department of State or from a public
telephone.
