Majapahit
Conquest (A.D. 1343)
The fall of Me
Singosari Empire after Kartanagara's assassination in 1292 was followed
by the -the of the new dynasty of Majapahit, GajahMada, the grand vizier
of King Radjasangara of Java's Majapahit, went to Bali in 1343 to subjugate
the some demonic king of the Balinese Pejeng Dyansty. Dalem Bedulu who
refused to recognize Majapahit supremacy.
Gajah Mada conquered Bali in the east Java spread from purely political
and religious, spheres into the arts and architecture. Bali became just
another outpost in an a which encompassed the entire archipelago The
Javanese court chronicler, Prapanca relates how all the vile, long-haired
Balinese princes were wiped out and that all the barbarian Balinese
customs are consistent with Javanese ones.' This, of course, was not
true as elements of Old Balinese culture-prestige stratification, endogamous
patriline ages, a developed witch-cult, and fight-knit irrigation societies--survive
intact up to the present day.
A young Brahman nobleman. Mpu Kapakisan, was appointed king of Bali
by Gajah Mada, and a colony of Javanese settlers was dispatched. The
Balinese revoked against the Majapahit time and again, but the uprisings
were put down in memorable battles, after which military figures became
rulers of Bali and to them the present Balinese aristocracy traces its
origin. The first four vassal rulers under the Javanese resided at a
royal court in Samprangan near Gianyar. During Hayam Wuruk rule (135-89)
a dissenting vassal, I Dewa Ketut Tegal Besung, fell out with his elder
brother (he had married his sister to a horse) find established a princely
court in Gelgel near Klungkung. Bali had been conquered at the peak
of Majapahit artistic flower and thus Gelgel soon rose as an artistic
power center which exerted a powerful influence over Bali's subsequent
cultural development. Hinduistic concepts filtered down to the villagers
via the electrifying medium of the shadow play.
Over 400 years ago most of East Java was like Bali is today. Prior to
1815 Bali had a greater population density than Java, suggesting that
its Hindu-Balinese civilization was even more successful then Java's.
In fact, when Sir Stamford Raffles wrote his History Of Java in the
early 19th century, he had to turn to Bali for what remained of the
once-great literature of Java.
Historically speaking, Bali is today still a fossil of Java during Majapahit's
golden age - a living museum of many elements of the old Indo-Javanese
civilization. Like a Tibet

we must point out a very important distinction which the Balinese make between
two clearly separate groups of ancestors. The first of these groups consists
of the dead who are riot yet completely purified. This group is in turn subdivided
in pirata, those riot yet cremated, and pitara, those already cremated. The
former are still completely impure; the latter have been purified, but are still
considered as distinct, individual souls. The second group consists of the completely
purified ancestors who are considered as divine.
No contact is sought with the pirata, the dead who have not yet been cremated.
Oil the contrary they are dangerous, Offerings must however be made for the
redemption of their souls.
