A cousin to the wild boar, Bali's famous pigs are weighted to collapse with their load of pork, their backbones sagging as if broken and their enormousiy heavy pink bellies dragging through the dust. Pigs are the property of the woman of the house and any money she earns from them belong to her A great delicacy of Bali not to be missed is suckling pig (be guling) roasted on a spit
The ducks of Bali, kept as family pets rank among the islands prominent citizen.
Squads of them are taken from the family kampung each day to feed in the rice fields, marching information under the flags of herders. In the fields they loosen the old roots, nose through the mud and grub for worms and leftover grains of rice. At days end, the flock gathers around the duck herder's long pole to be taken home again. Duck meat, in the form of a strongly spiced dish called bebek betutu, also makes for some of the finest eating on the Wand.
Cattle, with sweet melodic wooden bells, leap from banks with the lithe grace of antelope. These amiable, beautiful creatures with long eyelashes, delicate features, slender necks, trim bodies, slim legs, and short tails, look more like fawns than cattle Like most cows in the tropic, they give no milk; unlike the Hindus of India the Balinese don't consider them sacred and do eat them. The largest cattle markets in Bali take place at Beringkit (20 km south of Mengwi) and in Bebandem (in Karangasem Regency).

in Bali we must point out a very important distinction which the Balinese make between two clearly separate groups of ancestors. The first of these groups consists of the dead who are riot yet completely purified. This group is in turn subdivided in pirata, those riot yet cremated, and pitara, those already cremated. The former are still completely impure; the latter have been purified, but are still considered as distinct, individual souls. The second group consists of the completely purified ancestors who are considered as divine.
No contact is sought with the pirata, the dead who have not yet been cremated. Oil the contrary they are dangerous, Offerings must however be made for the redemption of their souls.
