Tandano

Tandano: From Tomohon take a fast bus to Tandano, Rp150, a market town with a nice river running through it. Lake Tandano: Many tourist resorts around this lake such as Tandengan and Eris. Visit Passo and Rembokan for ceramics and pottery; a better selection than the city (hotsprings as well). From Tandano village pay another Rp250 to travel either on the east or west shores of the lake to Kakas. There are no losmens in Kakas, but contact the kepala desa who'll turn you on to some accommodation if you're willing to speak English. Go to Kolongan Kawangkoan, Rp300 from Manado, for bullcart racing, celebrated ko/intang musical performances, and an underground Japanese fortress. The Maengket Dance can be seen in Tompaso. Batu Pinabetengan: A memorial stone of the ancestors near Kawangkoan, its surface covered in crude, mysterious line drawings and scripts which have never been deciphered. This historical stone is located about 5 km from the village of Pinabetengan; take a bendi out to it. According to Minahasan history this is the place where the ancestors divided the Minahasan people into tribes: Tontemboan, Tonsea, Tolour, Tombulu, Ratahan and Bantik. Today each tribe speaks its own dialect.
other sights in Minahasa: At Kema, an old Portugese fortress. A splendid beach at Kawurukan, only a '/ hour busride from Manado; also remains of Dutch and Japanese forts. Tasik Ria and Kawarukan are well known for sunbathing and canoeing.Longowan is a mountain village with hotsprings, sawah, and virgin forests. Walantaken hotsprings spurts hot steam every 3 minutes; Rp300 from Manado by minibus. Katumenga for hotwater bathing. At Tonsea Lama, a waterfall. Aertembaga is the fishing center of North Celebes. At Krawang, woven embroidered handkerchiefs. Airmadidi: Rp200 by bemo from Manado. Straightforward friendly people in this town. It's a real treat to get invited inside their rich wood grained well-built houses. In this mountain village see the best examples of warugas, old pre-Christian tombs of former leaders of the Minahasa people which are still venerated by some Minahasans. Having the shape of a small Chinese temple, corpses were buried inside in the squatting position with household articles, gold, and Asiatic porcelain dating back to the Ming Dynasty. Because they contained valuables, many have been plundered. There are other complexes at Sawangan and at Kema, but not as well-preserved as in Airmadidi.

in Bali we must point out a very important distinction which the Balinese make between two clearly separate groups of ancestors. The first of these groups consists of the dead who are riot yet completely purified. This group is in turn subdivided in pirata, those riot yet cremated, and pitara, those already cremated. The former are still completely impure; the latter have been purified, but are still considered as distinct, individual souls. The second group consists of the completely purified ancestors who are considered as divine.
No contact is sought with the pirata, the dead who have not yet been cremated. Oil the contrary they are dangerous, Offerings must however be made for the redemption of their souls.
