the kepala desa who'll turn you on to some accommodation if you're willing
to speak English. Go to Kolongan Kawangkoan, Rp300 from Manado, for bullcart
racing, celebrated ko/intang musical performances, and an underground
Japanese fortress. The Maengket Dance can be seen in Tompaso. Batu Pinabetengan:
A memorial stone of the ancestors near Kawangkoan, its surface covered
in crude, mysterious line drawings and scripts which have never been deciphered.
This historical stone is located about 5 km from the village of Pinabetengan;
take a bendi out to it. According to Minahasan history this is the place
where the ancestors divided the Minahasan people into tribes: Tontemboan,
Tonsea, Tolour, Tombulu, Ratahan and Bantik. Today each tribe speaks its
own dialect.

we must point out a very important distinction which the Balinese make between
two clearly separate groups of ancestors. The first of these groups consists
of the dead who are riot yet completely purified. This group is in turn subdivided
in pirata, those riot yet cremated, and pitara, those already cremated. The
former are still completely impure; the latter have been purified, but are still
considered as distinct, individual souls. The second group consists of the completely
purified ancestors who are considered as divine. Everything Bali Indonesia |
