Announcement of a Pacific Salmon Treaty agreement occurred during a press conference on June 3rd. The treaty has yet to be signed and some small details remain to be worked out. Under the agreed upon terms, no major changes in management will occur in the gillnet fishery.

During the press conference, Governor Knowles stated that the treaty was agreed upon in principal but that the treaty must satisfy Alaska's obligation under ESA and court decisions. Signing of the treaty is also contingent upon money being appropriated by the US Federal Government. $140 million would be split into two boundary treaty funds, (Northern and Southern) for joint US and Canadian projects. This would include assessment, monitoring, restoration, rehabilitation and enhancement projects. Also mentioned was $100 million for salmon restoration in the Pacific Northwest (sometimes referred to as the Governor's fund.
