for student affairs Kitchen
leaving her post as vice chancellor Susan
T. Kitchen is leaving her post next month as vice chancellor for student
affairs at the University.
Five employees honored with Chancellor's Awards Five Carolina employees are this year's recipients of the Chancellor's Award. The winners, who receive a monetary award and three days of special leave, will be recognized with framed certificates at a luncheon later this year with Chancellor James Moeser and Vice Chancellor Nancy Suttenfield. The winners are: Deborah Foster, Department of Ortho-paedics, School of Medicine; Diane Gillis, Facilities Planning; Archie Lassiter, Facilities Services; Kenneth Moore, North Carolina Botanical Garden; and Warren Wicker, School of Government. The five were recognized for meritorious or distinguished accomplishments in one or more categories: devotion to duty, innovations, public service, safety/heroism, human relations or other achievements.
Foster: heroic deed An office assistant with the School of Medicine, Foster's nomination for Safety/ Heroism didn't originate with her health-care-related position with the Department of Orthopaedics, but rather in the mud by the side of Interstate 85 near Oxford.
And assist she did, on that rainy day on I-85. She and her family came upon a bad accident, in which a would-be Good Samaritan had stopped before them and was hit by another car. Foster freed the woman, who had traumatic amputations of her legs, gave appropriate first aid and also administered CPR, which she continued until emergency medical people arrived. "There was no question that Deborah had saved this woman's life ... Her love and caring attitude for others is exhibited in her everyday interactions."
Gillis: green visionary A facility architect with Facilities Planning, Gillis was nominated in the category of Innovations, and among her nominators, her work with the Sustainability Coalition was mentioned many times. As a founding member of the coalition, Gillis "has been paving the way for the integration of sustainable practices in the design and construction of University facilities." Her leadership has been "deliberate and persistent," and it was said in her nominating materials that she "is literally and figuratively changing the landscape" at Carolina. She has championed the construction of more resource-efficient and less costly buildings, and the campus stormwater management will be "watched and emulated throughout the country." In summing up her contributions, it was said that Gillis' "humility, her tireless and good-natured approach, and her expertise in sustainable design enable her to achieve changes that others proclaim are impossible." Lassiter: outstanding customer service A mail clerk supervisor, Lassiter was described as "the consummate professional" in his nominating materials; he was nominated in the areas of Outstanding State Government Service and Public Service.
Unable to leave the job behind just because he leaves work, It's not uncommon for him to come back to campus to log in important mail on a weekend so it'll be ready to go out with the first delivery Monday morning. He is known across campus for his dedication, friendly attitude and outstanding customer service. One of his nominators wrote, "He goes beyond the call of duty, not only to help you but in the best possible manner. Every request submitted to Mr. Lassiter is always handled in a pleasant and courteous manner." Within his department, he is admired by his fellow employees for his "work ethic and morals." It was said that he "leads his employees ... by example. He never asks anyone to do a job or task that he himself is not willing to do." Moore: the garden's ambassador
Assistant director of the North Carolina Botanical Garden and the garden's
first permanent employee in 1971, Moore has a distinguished history
of innovation and dedicated service. Like Lassiter, he was nominated
in the areas of Outstanding State Moore pioneered the Conservation through Propagation project in the 1970s, which seeks to promote propagation of plants from seeds "to reduce collection pressure in the wild." In this regard, "he can truly be described as a founder of the movement to make landscaping both environmentally responsible and aesthetically pleasing." One of his first efforts involved plant rescue -- getting permission and relocating plants to the garden that would otherwise be lost to bulldozers and asphalt. This effort proved to be a way to diversify the garden's plant collections, too. He founded the annual Sculpture in the Garden show 14 years ago and developed the volunteer program in 1972. Moore was also responsible for the concept of the memorial bench program. Moore was praised many times by his nominators for his welcoming manner at the garden. One said, "His vigilance, care, hospitality and grace have characterized the public face of the garden for all these years." And another wrote, "Ken is quite simply unique; through his passion and compassion, he has enriched the lives of all who know him."
Wicker: professor of collegiality
Wicker is the Gladys Hall Coates professor of public law and government
in the School of Government, as well as its assistant director emeritus.
Formally retired for 11 years, he's been a member of the Institute of
Government faculty for almost 47 years and still puts in many hours
of work each week. Simply said, the mission of the Institute of Government is to improve the quality of government in North Carolina, and no one, according to his nominating materials, "has done more in furtherance of that mission than Warren Jake Wicker." He's been able to excel in this mission not only because of the "breadth of his knowledge but also because of his wisdom and his creative intelligence" another nominator wrote. All of his nominators wrote of their good fortune to be associated with Wicker -- a "brilliant, humble, unassuming, dedicated colleague," one wrote. "He's succeeded repeatedly throughout his years at the institute to help everyone else be their best self. This is demonstrated over and over in the many occasions where Jake has convinced conflicting parties in local government to sit down together and turn seemingly unbridgeable differences into solid, permanent agreements because everyone at the table knew that Jake was pure goodness and could be trusted absolutely by all parties every step of the way."
