What is Glycolic Acid?

The active ingredient in Skin Scripts products is glycolic acid. Glycolic acid belongs to the family of alpha-hydroxyl acids (AHA's). The terms alpha-hydroxyl acids may sound threatening, however the family of alpha-hydroxyl acids is more commonly referred to as "fruit acids", since they are found in many fruits and foods (citric acid from citrus fruits, malic acid from apples, lactic acid from sour milk and tartic acid from grapes).

Glycolic acid has been proven as the superior alpha-hydroxyl acid or AHA with regards to skin refinement and this is the active ingredient in Skin Scripts products.

How does Glycolic Acid Work?

The effectiveness of alpha-hydroxyl acid to improve skin quality, texture and tone was first reported in ancient times. Romans would apply sludge from the bottom of the wine urns to their skin to achieve chemical peeling and freshen the skin. We now know the active ingredient of the sludge is malic acid, the AHA derived from grapes.

Aging/Sun Damaged Skin
Biological aging (hereditary aging) and photoaging (sun exposure related aging) work together resulting in many undesirable changes that occur to the skin. Among those include a decrease in cellular turnover, a decrease in shedding of the dead skin cells and a build up of cells. In addition, oil production lessens as skins ability to protect itself against dryness decreases. Together these processes result in dry, dull and rough skin texture and tome.

Glycolic acid loosens the dead skin cell layer and increases cellular turnover causing the skin to become rejuvenated. Texture and tone return as well as a "healthy appearance" or glow.

Active Acne/Acne Prone Skin
In acne prone skin, sebaceous activity (oil gland production) is abnormally increased. More importantly, a process called keratinization within the oil gland is abnormal. The Abnormal accumulation of keratinous material within the gland causes plugging and seepage of oil into the surrounding tissue. Infection and inflammation ensue resulting in clinical acne.

Glycolic acid appears to alter the abnormal keratinization by dislodging the keratinous plugs. Glycolic acid also offers a distinct advantage over the other comedolytic agents because it is much less irritating to the skin while being equally or more effective than them.
