Walk this Way
School of Public Health's Active Living by Design team leads by doing

By Russell C. Campbell III
"Gazette" contributing writer

There's that old saying: Never judge people until you've walked a mile in their shoes. So what can be determined after walking for seven hours and 26 miles? Perhaps the answers can be found in the office of Active Living by Design, because one Sunday in November they found out what it was like to walk in the New York City Marathon.

THE BIG WALK The team from the School of Public Health's Active Living by Design pose for a photo in the Big Apple; they participated as a group by walking in the New York City Marathon. Pictured are (left - right) Rich Bell, Sarah Strunk, Helen Mahan, Casey Allred, Mark Dessauer, Phil Bors, Rich Killingsworth and Paula Brady.

The marathon capped off a number of activities designed to be an exercise in team building, to help them come together. There was the 12-mile hike in Hanging Rock State Park, the 5k run to raise money to fight colon cancer and a 20-mile bike ride that included training on how to ride with traffic. There's also the community service where the office gets together to clean trash from the greenway every few months.

"We all came to the organization at the same time from different places," said Richard Killingsworth, director of Active Living by Design. "We needed a catalyst to help spark different ways of developing as a team."
