Asia & the Pacific

Overview

Extending across an enormous area and highly diverse cultures, the Asia and Pacific region is home to 60 per cent of the world's people. Although wide disparities among countries exist, Asia on the whole has made significant progress on both the social and economic fronts and has witnessed a rapid decline in the average population growth rate. With an emphasis on national capacity building and support for reproductive health services, UNFPA has been a catalyst in helping countries implement ICPD goals.

Many countries in the region continue to grapple with high levels of poverty, low levels of literacy, problems associated with urbanization, gender inequalities and gender-based violence. But the biggest threat to the Asian and Pacific region is the alarming, steadily rising incidence of HIV/AIDS. Even in countries where the epidemic is localized or prevalent among specific population groups, there is a serious threat of its spilling over into the population and leading to major, generalized epidemics. more
