Latin America & the Caribbean

Overview

The Latin America and the Caribbean Division oversees UNFPA activities in 30 countries: ten in the Caribbean, eight in Central America and 12 in South America. countries. As of 2003, the region was home to 534 million people, and its population was growing at a rate of 1.46 per cent — down from 1.72 per cent in the1990-1995 period. The region’s economy has not kept pace with population growth in the past few years, and development needs remain pressing.

Access to reproductive health information and services in the region is closely tied to income. In spite of efforts to make motherhood safer, far too many women continue to die as a consequence of pregnancy or childbirth. Confronting sexually transmitted infections, including HIV/AIDS, is an urgent challenge, especially in the Caribbean subregion, which has the highest incidence of HIV/AIDS after sub-Saharan Africa. Given the threat of HIV and high teenage fertility rates, more attention needs to be given to reproductive health information and services for adolescents. UNFPA supports programming in all these areas, and is active in multi-agency, multi-sectoral processes to catalyze sustainable economic and social development within the framework of the Millennium Development Goals. more
