| How
We Work
UNFPA's support – in the areas of reproductive
health, population and development and advocacy – is delivered
through its field offices.
UNFPA has resident offices in 43 of the 45 sub-Saharan countries
it serves. Its representatives in the region work with governments,
partner agencies or non-governmental organizations, to implement
projects and programmes. The field offices also coordinate
timely assistance when emergency situations arise.
The size and organization of each
field office depends on the size and complexity of the
country programme. Typically, the office will include
a field representative, programme officers, and support
staff. Some field representatives cover more than one
country.
The Technical Advisory Programme
(TAP) is a multi-agency partnership engaged in knowledge-sharing
within the UN system and with selected non-governmental
organizations. UNFPA's Country Technical Services Teams
(CSTs) – multi-disciplinary specialists who serve as
a link between field offices and developments at headquarters
– are part of this effort.
The teams help design and evaluate programmes,
incorporating strategic approaches and perspective gained
from their work in the region. They also provide training
and technical backstopping.
The Africa-based CSTs are headquartered
in three subregional offices:
Based at the Fund's NY headquarters, the
Africa Division provides overall policy support and guidance
for development and implementation of regional and country
programmes. Like the support clusters in the field, the
Africa division at headquarters is divided into subregional
clusters.
The division also:
-
Advocates on reproductive health and population issues
vital to the region
-
Contributes to formulation of strategies and policies
appropriate to the needs of sub-Saharan Africa.
-
Mobilizes resources
and ensures they are used effectively to support priority
population and development needs
-
Manages regional
programmes
