Florida Dance Information
Ah, Google Dances....
I don't know what goes on in the Google Plex when they decide to "dance"...but I've got this funny picture in my mind of some of the GoogleGuys down at the Google Plex in a large open room with a big Green button/knob on the wall. Someone starts turning the knob, and then they run to their computers and start viewing what results are returned to see if they "improved" more than they "messed up" with the new "formula" knob turn. I think following Florida they kinda look around and say, "Oh, huh! - Look, it improved these listings here...but oh...it gave crappy ones over here...maybe we could add in this formula, and then they turn that knob back some and see how those results turn out. And that's kinda what looked like happened for many listings...Florida brought the world of Internet Marketing to a new level...a level that suggests to going overboard in some areas could be bad (PR, links, optimization) ....I believe that balance and relevance are the keys for today, and for tomorrow, too - Think natural.
Google changes, and changes, and changes, etc.
I can sense a million people thinking..."Google, hold still long enough so we can try to figure you out. Once we think we've got you "figured out" we'll just feed you more and more of the "good stuff" (backlinks, pagerank, exact keyword text, pages, repetition), more, more, more....relevance? Huh? What's that?" (I've been just as guilty as the next).
So the Florida dance happens...and the rumors start....oh no...Google's broke again....conspiracy theories arise...Adwords....IPO....Money..echo in the forums and in the minds of many....Google says "No"...echos Iron curton between AdWords and Search....just "tinkering"....that I personally believe.
I think people give Google too much credit by thinking they have exact control over every search result....many think "they did this on purpose" (as they view a specific search and don't see their site), "My site is better than these!" they cry. (that's what their competitors are all thinking too).....and yet sometimes those information pages are pretty good too....and sometime Google just doesn't return the "best results"...why, well it's a computer running mathematical equations...and those are programmed by humans...even if they are all PHD's! Returning "relevant" results in the blink of an eye is a science that is in its infancy, there are bound to be shifts, and how we react to these shifts will dictate who is going to be in this "game" tomorrow.
So what's after Florida?
Diversify your marketing, think relevance, and know that change is coming every day.
How did We Build Pages Do?
During Florida we won some, and we lost some...but the important thing is that it made us think and grow and forced us to get better at what we do. We're trying to take the high road. Wanna come along?
