December 18, 2003 Beyond New York: Building Communities through Study Abroad
The question of how to build communities, at home and abroad, is a poignant one these days. On Tuesday, December 9, 2003, four SIT Study Abroad alumni gathered at Columbia University in New York City with fellow alumni, parents and prospective students to speak about community building and what they learned during their semesters abroad with SIT. The event was sponsored by SIT Study Abroad and members of the SIT Partnership Council and other institutions of higher education. In opening the event, Laurie Black, SIT Assistant Dean for External Relations, recognized that occasions such as this, like the study abroad experience itself, are a "great opportunity to see how people come together." She noted that SIT alumni have recently begun to network and learn from each other on a large scale, and that we hope to continue to foster those networks in the future.
SIT President Jim Cramer noted in his opening remarks the two major trends in undergraduate education: the internationalization of the curriculum and the importance of undergraduate research. Field study programs can fill both those needs, as well as teaching students about the importance of community on a local and global level. In recognizing the inclusion in the mission statements of many institutions of higher education the need to "create global citizens" -- a need which study abroad is well positioned to address, Cramer said, "I can think of nothing better than fostering person to person diplomacy" through the kinds of connections made as part of studying abroad.
