IN BRIEF

NUMBERS • The Marriott Hotel ranked No. 1 in sales for 2002 in the Czech Republic, according to an annual survey conducted by Food Service magazine. The 293-room hotel made 618 million Kc ($22 million) in sales last year, up from 600 million Kc the year before. The Renaissance Prague Hotel came in second, with almost 514 million Kc worth of sales, and Corinthia Towers was No. 3, with 482.5 million Kc in sales. The information was reported by the hotels themselves, and some hotels that used to lead the survey, such as the InterContinental and Hilton, did not participate. They were both closed for a time after the August floods.

BIKES • The Czech Tourist Authority launched a bicycle tourism project called Krasna zeme (Beautiful Country) in Trebon, south Bohemia, July 15. The project is made up of 30 stages of 50 kilometers (31 miles) that pass through all 14 of the country's regions before returning to south Bohemia. The idea behind the promotion is to show that a monthlong vacation can be spent in the Czech Republic. Tourist Authority Director David Gladis said the ride includes 51 castles and chateaux, nine castle ruins, bunkers, 50 museums, four breweries and several spas.
