Myanmar,
or Burma as it is still more commonly known in the west,
is a country of magnificent, ancient Buddhist temples,
broad fast flowing rivers, lush mountain forests, interesting
cities and vastly contrasting countryside. Myanmar's
coastline runs from the Bangladesh border in the northwest
down to the Malay Peninsula and Thailand in the southeast.
Southern Myanmar consists largely of the western slopes
of the Bilauktaung Range, which constitutes the northern
base of the Malay Peninsula. Northern Myanmar, comprises
the great bulk of the country's area, consists largely
of the broad river valley of the Irrawaddy. Travelling
to Myanmar is not only a voyage into a different geographic
region, but also a voyage into another time.
Each destination within the country offers an interesting
and diverse look at the history and development of the
country from her hill tribes that live much as people
did hundreds of years ago to the vibrant capital of
Yangon (Rangoon), she has a lot to offer her visitors.
Sightseeing opportunities abound and all in all there
is a lot to see and do in this colourful country where
time seems to have stood still.
