Greetings from Palm Springs, California...home of the San Andreas Fault, the largest Fault in the Western Hemisphere. The San Andreas Fault slices through California like a jagged knife carving through burnt toast. The fault is approximately 900 miles long and is active. We average about 200 earthquakes per week!
Scientists believe the fault dates back to 225 million years ago when one giant land mass began to fracture and break up. The San Andreas Fault is where the massive Pacific Tectonic Plate is grinding by the even larger North American Plate. Here in Palm Springs; and in fact the entire Western portion of California, we are slowly moving North while the rest of California is heading South.
We have two massive mountains that stand as sentries to the Coachella Valley. One is Mount San Gorgonio at 11,502 feet elevation and the other is Mount San Jacinto at 10,831 feet. These two giants have been bumping heads for thousands of years and have lifted each other up to the stars in the process. Incidentally, San Jacinto is home to the Palm Springs Aerial Tramway and provides a marvelous panoramic view of the valley.
