Winter Recreation - On The Slopes

Geoff Burke, VirtualTahoe.com's Sports Editor, hits the slopes at Lake Tahoe to bring you an experienced "insider view." In this issue, Geoff checks out the runs and fun at Kirkwood.

Kirkwood

My buddies check out one of the many cliff jumps at Kirkwood. (click on any of the photos for a larger view)

With an average snowfall of almost 500 inches a year, Kirkwood has become a favorite stop for locals and visitors to the Lake Tahoe Basin. Kirkwood regularly boosts the most annual snowfall of any resort in the northern 48 states, and with the new mountain village taking shape, Kirkwood looks to become a world-class destination resort in no time. A new ice- skating rink, pool, spa and sports bar and grill are just a few of the new additions to Kirkwood’s already famous skiing and riding terrain.

Even in the afternoon there were still fresh tracks to be found.

With over 2,300 acres of mountain to choose from, Kirkwood offers something for every level of rider. Although Kirkwood is known around the world for it’s extreme terrain, beginners and intermediates have over 65% of the mountain for the taking plus spectacular views of cliff bands and cornices to inspire them all day long.

My highschool buddy Glen Zinser enjoys Kirkwoods light and dry powder.

Kirkwood's Famous Heart Chute.

The day I spent out at Kirkwood was one of those classic powder days you normally see farther east in the Rockies. Very cold temperatures and lots of snow made for one of my best days of the season. I really could of used a snorkel for my first couple of runs. The snow was so light, dry and deep I thought I was in the backcountry or on a heli-skiing adventure, not at a ski resort. Well that’s Kirkwood! On any given day you could have the skiing or riding experience of your life. This day turned out to be just that.

With 3 feet of snow over the past two days it was pretty much fresh tracks everywhere for the first couple of hours. We started on Kirkwood’s high-speed quad chair #6, which lets you access most of the front side of the mountain. Everything from cliff jumps, steep chutes,high-speed groomers, trees and moguls are accessed right from this chair. We were not able to get to the backside of the mountain because of avalanche control, but it didn't really matter with all that chair #6 has to offer. What a day my two friends and I had exploring and hiking around this mountain. I can't wait to come out again.

Waist deep powder for my friend Adam. Can you believe this was our last run of the day!!!

Do yourself a favor next time you go skiing or boarding head out to Kirkwood and you won’t be disappointed.
