Malawi SHARED Project
Through SHARED, World Learning provides financial resources to local and international organizations and has successfully managed a wide range of capacity-building and organizational development grants. Ninety-three percent of grant recipients are indigenous NGOs. In addition, World Learning provides training on financial management, monitoring and evaluation, project management, and board development. In 1997 the Project was recognized by the NGO community and international donors as the principle player in the campaign to foster a culture of accountability in Malawi’s civil society. In 1996 World Learning and USAID agreed to take steps to transform SHARED into a local, independent NGO by the Project’s conclusion in 2000. As a result of strategic planning sessions and informational networking, the local Project Management Unit has established The Development Centre, a nonprofit organization which has developed mission, case, and capability statements. The Development Centre became a fully functioning Malawian NGO in July 1999 and has already attracted the attention of donors such as the United Nations and the European Union.
