Unbeaten Lander triumphs over St. Andrews, 6-5

2003Corey_Watkins.jpg (14021 bytes)GREENWOOD----The Lander baseball team got solo home runs from three different players Wednesday afternoon as the undefeated Bearcats broke a 5-5 tie in the bottom of the ninth inning and walked in the winning run in a 6-5 non-conference victory over St. Andrews at Legion Field.. Lander improves to 7-0, while St. Andrews drops to 4-3.

After St. Andrews took a 3-0 lead in the first inning, Lander's Kyle Whitson, Justin Dickson and David Walton all hit homeruns to keep the Bearcats alive.

Corey Watkins (1-0) earned the win in 2.2 innings of relief. Watkins struck out three and allowed just two hits. St. Andrews' Anthony Mehling (0-1) took the loss, after facing just one batter.

In the ninth inning with the scored tied 5-5, St. Andrews pitcher Brad Smith loaded the bases with one out. Walton doubled to right center then advanced to third on Bob Fenn's sacrifice bunt. St. Andrews intentionally walked Dickson and Walter Cochrane to load the bases. Mehling then walked Kyle Whitson to score the winning run.

Walton went 4-for-5 with one home run, two doubles and one RBI, Dickson went 1-for-4 with one homer, Whitson went 2-for-3 with one homer and two RBI and Ryan Roeder went 1-for-2 with one double and one RBI.

St. Andrews' Clifton Allred went 2-for-4 with one homerun, one double and two RBI,  and Everett Kelly went 1-for-4 with one double and one RBI.
