DING,DONG,DELL.WHAT,S THAT DOWN THE WELL
Kings are different Let's not fool ourselves about that. And the old time kings of Bali were more different than most.
For a kick-off, they could - and, be!ieve me, they did - have a limitless number of wives, with an inexfiaustible supply of concubines on standby against a rainy day.

And even this generous mark-up was no bar to a roving eye.
The tale is told of one old king who had a special pavilion built in front of his palace, where, every morning, he would sit eyeing the young girls on their way to market. Whenever he saw a likely candidate for his favours, he would command a man servant to bring her to the palace.

So ardent were his attentions, that local beauties used to hide their faces under baskets of vegetables, or sneak into the market by a back lane, in order to avoid a command performance.
In addition to wives - a king also had magic.
Take the case of the King who became angered with his servant, pointed an acusing finger - and reduced the unfortunate man to a quivering, shivering shadow - who cowered in his own home, refusing food and drink. After three days, his distraught wife sought audience with the King, on bended knees.

"Your Majesty, I beg you, forgive my husband," she wept. "Take your curse off him, or he will surely die."
The King, touched by the woman's grief, plucked the red hibiscus Out of his royal headcloth, tore the flower into shreds and dropped it into a bowl of water. (Kings always have a bowl of water handy for moments like these).
"Take this home, give it to your husband to drink, and he will recover - and live to serve me for many years to come," promised the King.

in Bali we must point out a very important distinction which the Balinese make between two clearly separate groups of ancestors. The first of these groups consists of the dead who are riot yet completely purified. This group is in turn subdivided in pirata, those riot yet cremated, and pitara, those already cremated. The former are still completely impure; the latter have been purified, but are still considered as distinct, individual souls. The second group consists of the completely purified ancestors who are considered as divine.
No contact is sought with the pirata, the dead who have not yet been cremated. Oil the contrary they are dangerous, Offerings must however be made for the redemption of their souls.
