Gateway Visitor Center: Hess cotoneaster (Cotoneaster ‘Hessei’) - red berries.

Sun Plant Evaluation Garden:

Evaluation Beds: Panicle hydrangea (Hydrangea paniculata ‘Webb’s Grandiflora’) - seedheads. Collections 2000 Bed: Bergenia (Bergenia ‘Herbstblute’ & ‘Admiral’) - maroon winter color, purple twig dogwood (Cornus alba ‘Kesselringii’) - branches deep red brick color.

Shade Plant Evaluation Garden:

Bark on paperbark maple (Acer griseum), river birch (Betula nigra), Fox Valley™ river birch (Betula nigra 'Little King'), Himalayan birch (Betula utilis), seven-son flower (Heptacodium jasminoides), Japanese stewartia (Stewartia pseudocamellia); evergreen foliage on boxwoods (Buxus spp.), variegated blue holly (Ilex x meserveae 'Honey Maid'), Waukegan grape-holly (Mahonia aquifolium 'Waukegan'); evergreen ground covers European ginger (Asarum europaeum), English holly (Hedera helix), Henry honeysuckle (Lonicera henryi), periwinkle (Vinca minor).
