African Language Guides

SIT's Center for Intercultural Programs works closely with SIT Study Abroad to strengthen the instruction of the more than 25 languages taught at SIT Study Abroad program sites around the world. 80% of these languages are considered "less-commonly-taught." In an effort to standardize the foreign language curriculum on one continent, SIT Center for Intercultural Programs received a FIPSE grant from the Department of Education in 1999 to develop teacher and student educational guides for 11 African languages:

  • Bamanankan (Mali)
  • Fante Twi and Asante Twi (Ghana)
  • Ndebele and Shona (Zimbabwe)
  • Setswana (Botswana)
  • Swahili (Kenya and Tanzania)
  • Wolof (Senegal)
  • Xhosa and
  • Zulu (South Africa)

In August 2002, the SIT Center for Intercultural Programs received a second FIPSE grant to train all of SIT Study Abroad's African language teachers in how to use the guides. A major purpose of this second phase is to develop SIT's African language program, its teachers, and its students as a model for other language teaching programs. By the end of the project's proposed 14-month training period, all of SIT Study Abroad's language teachers in Africa will have received training in the educational materials developed.

Salaam-Shalom-Peace

The first part of Salaam/Shalom/Peace offered three-hour classes in Arabic and Hebrew language and culture classes every morning and every afternoon free of charge. For the second part, presentations exploring Judaic and Islamic culture and history were offered to the SIT community and members of the public every evening from 7 to 9 p.m.
