Diving
is generally not recommended for children under 13
years of age but the older kids will have fun at Sihanoukville, the only area thus far developed for
this underwater activity.
Elephant Trekking
can be done in Ratanakiri and Mondulkiri and is an
absolute must do activity if travelling with
children.
Warning:
You are advised to take a guide, as land mines and
other dangers make venturing off the beaten track,
dangerous.
Go-Karting
can be done in
Phnom Penh
Golf
This activity tends to be for the older kids amongst
us but there is no reason that younger children
can’t join in.
At the moment there are only two golf courses in the
entire country, the Cambodia Golf & Country Club (C.G.C.C.)
and the Royal Phnom Penh Golf Course. The Cambodia
Golf & Country Club (C.G.C.C.) lies to the south of
Phnom Penh
about 1 hour’s drive from the city and lays claim to
being Cambodia's first 18-hole golf course. Royal
Phnom Penh Golf Course lies to the south of Phnom
Penh only 1/2 hour’s drive from the city. There is
also a driving range on the roof of
the Parkway Square at 113 Mao Tse Toung Street.
Jet-skiing
is another activity that can be done in Phnom Penh
and
Sihanoukville and it is advised that parents keep an
eye on their kids while they are on these machines
or go with them. Please be aware of swimmers in the
water when using these go fast (motor-bike) boats
and keep well clear of them.
Mini golf
is available in Phnom Penh, ask at your hotel for
more details on arrival.
Ten pin bowling
Come roll some balls, at the Phnom Penh Bowling
Club, corner of Monivong & Street 288 or at the
Parkway Square on Mao Tse Toung. This activity is
becoming increasingly popular in Cambodia and you
are advised to ask at your hotel on arrival in case
other centres have been established since writing.
Sports Clubs for Kids
The National Sports Complex and the International
Youth Club in Phnom Penh offer some facilities, but
the best form of exercise is probably renting a
bicycle from your hotel or walking.
River Tours
Trips on the Mekong and Tonle Sap rivers are
becoming increasingly popular, one highlight being
the opportunity to see Cambodia's famous freshwater
dolphins near Kratié.
Snorkelling
opportunities abound in and around Sihanoukville.
Trekking
There are still many thousands of unexploded
land-mines in more remote areas of Cambodia.
Trekking is therefore still fairly limited, though
some marked routes are available around Ratanakiri.
Warning:
In rural areas, travellers are strongly advised to
seek local advice and not stray from the main paths.
Water Sports
A range of water sports including swimming is
available at Sihanoukville and a number of hotels
not based at seaside locations have swimming pools
and pool slides that will keep the kids occupied for
hours.
White-water Rafting
For the fearless, this activity is seen as fun and
exciting but for others, taking on the wrath of a
river is just sheer madness. Be it fun or sheer
madness, those preferring to defy all reasons of
logic might find white-water rafting in Cambodia a
truly extraordinary experience.
