Yet Madera's strategy apparently overestimated the capacity of his own people to act contrary to their culture's primary values. In 1953, some twenty years after his death, his son sold a portion of the property to finance a fitting cremation.
Members of the town house recall the standard ominous apparition - a classical script letter visible on the skull joint - seen when the skeleton was retrieved to be cleaned and reassembled. They assert that this exhumation marked the start of the subhouse's decline. Troubles, many attributed to Madera's ancestral ire, continued throughout the 1950 and 1 960, as relations with the town house worsened. The aloofness of Madera's son from Market side East's general affairs while he was still prospering had aggravated problems. It is said that this self-interest and a series of poor judgments led to the depiction of his lands, the death of his first wife, and his ill health since remarrying

Other troubles stemmed from yet another practical legacy, by Nyoman Madera concerning an outsider wife. He left tier a chechatu, a husband's provision for an outsider widow in case his family neglects tier. in Bali we must point out a very important distinction which the Balinese make between two clearly separate groups of ancestors. The first of these groups consists of the dead who are riot yet completely purified. This group is in turn subdivided in pirata, those riot yet cremated, and pitara, those already cremated. The former are still completely impure; the latter have been purified, but are still considered as distinct, individual souls. The second group consists of the completely purified ancestors who are considered as divine.
No contact is sought with the pirata, the dead who have not yet been cremated. Oil the contrary they are dangerous, Offerings must however be made for the redemption of their souls.
