maharaja was requested by his royal counterpart in the second most eminent kingdom (Gianyar) to provide him a capable administrator. So Klungkung dispatched the younger brother and sister of a powerful official with the rank of Pasek - an honorific title applied to low-caste overseers of various temple congregations. This brother and sister - the ancestors - eventually turned tip in tile service of the ruling house of the adjacent kingdom (Badung). Jealousy over the raja's favor toward these importunate parvenus led his kinsmen to plot their murder: sensing danger, the ancestors fled. They paused at a place called Buit (Mengwi), but fearing their master's forces, continued their fornitilaic trek to Sudimarna in Tabanan kingdom. In time a neighbor was appointed irrigation officer by the raja, and lie employed the triale ancestor to itemize a rice shipment bound for the palace. The quality of penmanship so impressed the ruler that he inquired after its scribe and had him indentured to the court. The ancestors moved to a quarter of Tabanan town downstream from the noble neighborhood. The sister won the raja's love, became his concubine, and bore his son. The boy was eventually received at the palace to be educated in courtly ways, and his cleverness won him the post of first secretary (Penyarikan) of the realm. Consequently his name, I Gde Arta, and his descendants entered the official chronicles of the Tabanan royal dynasty. He was domiciled in houselands known as Marketside East, exresiderice of a reputedly noble line banished for misconduct. The new residents, the only commoners in the highcaste quarter, assumed this place-narne as their own title. And during 1906 I Gde Arta's descendants were found there by the Dutch conquerors, whereupon the previous story was compiled so to make their official standing more convincing to the new European perpetuators of the old Balinese order.

in Bali we must point out a very important distinction which the Balinese make between two clearly separate groups of ancestors. The first of these groups consists of the dead who are riot yet completely purified. This group is in turn subdivided in pirata, those riot yet cremated, and pitara, those already cremated. The former are still completely impure; the latter have been purified, but are still considered as distinct, individual souls. The second group consists of the completely purified ancestors who are considered as divine.
No contact is sought with the pirata, the dead who have not yet been cremated. Oil the contrary they are dangerous, Offerings must however be made for the redemption of their souls.
