Oh, Jojol was already at Taro, he had gone out in the cool Of t1he morning.
It is at times like these that the Balinese self-help service comes into its own. From nowhere came a group of villagers to cluster around my driver and hear the problem. Hastily a boy was sent hotfooting to another village, to return some 20-minutes later astride an ancient, wheezing, rust-ridden motorbike, circa 1900. Its antique status being verified by the fact it only boasted a

passenger's pedal on the offside, a minor detail which I discovered the moment we lurched off and I caught my right foot in the wheel spokes trying to find a foothold.

The bike, evidently mad at being kicked in the spokes, aimed itself at a high stone wall, then abruptly- changed its mind and plunged onward and downward, as. the road took an unexpected dive, down an almost vertical 100-ft. drop to the river.
And the river, determined not to short-sell the act, had at this point cunningly filled itself with walloping great boulders, so that the boiling torrent of water bearing down the mountain could only force its way through in violent jets, until any hope of crossing seemed more like an act of faith than a physical possibility.
Stop, I screamed, as the spluttering bike downed my cry,
while we lurched here, twisted there, and then were miraculously chuffing up the rockstrewn opposite bank, while 1, with my free right leg swinging wildly to clear the wheel, clung grimly to the rider.

in Bali we must point out a very important distinction which the Balinese make between two clearly separate groups of ancestors. The first of these groups consists of the dead who are riot yet completely purified. This group is in turn subdivided in pirata, those riot yet cremated, and pitara, those already cremated. The former are still completely impure; the latter have been purified, but are still considered as distinct, individual souls. The second group consists of the completely purified ancestors who are considered as divine.
No contact is sought with the pirata, the dead who have not yet been cremated. Oil the contrary they are dangerous, Offerings must however be made for the redemption of their souls.
