Roger McGough
Roger McGough
Poet, playwright, broadcaster and children's author
Biography

Roger McGough, 'a trickster you can trust', is one of Britain's best-known poetry voices. The award-winning poet, playwright, broadcaster and children's author was born in Liverpool and taught at St Kevin's School, Kirby, Mabel Fletcher College, Liverpool, and the Liverpool College of Art. He was member of the pop music/poetry group 'The Scaffold' between 1963 and 1973. He made his name as one of the 'Liverpool Poets' with Adrian Henri and Brian Patten, published in The Mersey Sound: Penguin Modern Poets 10. He is a member of the executive council of the Poetry Society, and was awarded the OBE in 1997. Further information on Roger, including details about Lively, his new live recording, is available at his website.

Poetry Society

The place to visit for anyone with an interest in poetry is the Poetry Society website. It's got it all: news, current publications, events, education resources, links to other poetry websites, competitions and of course poems. In the build up to National Poetry Day (9 October) the Poetry Society is a must for any teacher or literature development workers, offering a range of themed events and activities. Whatever it is you are looking for, finding it couldn't be easier - even for a technophobe like myself! So if you are after a bit of help on how to pep up your poetry lessons, who's who in the poetry world, or posters to brighten up the corridors or classrooms at your school, make sure you pay the Poetry Society website a visit!

The Poetry Jukebox

A fun website to visit is the Poetry Jukebox. It is designed to look like an old Wurlitzer jukebox, but you won't need to look for 50p in the bottom of your pocket to make it work! At any time of the day you can get a quick blast of one of a selection of about 30 poets - from Patience Agbabi to Benjamin Zephaniah - reading their work.

The Poetry Library

The Poetry Library is the most comprehensive collection of modern poetry in Britain containing all twentieth and twenty-first century work published in the UK, a huge selection from other English speaking countries and an unrivalled collection of translations. Its website includes educational resources, links to websites about a wide range of poets, and advice for young poets. The library has just launched a new site, poetry magazines, which gives free online access to poems, short stories and articles published in a wide range of poetry magazines.
