Story of Bali, Indonesia

Well, now we have one Raksasa down, and one to go - for Pak Raksasa was still all alivel and stealing young girls like they'd lost the receipe and broken the mould. Till the day came when a clever man in a nearby village hit on an idea and called a meeting to plan how to kill the Raksasa. (Bloodthirsty little legend, is it not).

Anyway, this was the scheme: Every girl must at all times carry with her two handsful of rice wrapped in a cloth, and when one was stolen by the Raksasa, she must scatter a few grains all along the way, so that the villagers could follow the trail of rice to his secret cave. But when, at last, the villagers found their way to that sinister hole, none was brave enough to enter. Then the head man stepped forward: "Bring black palm thatch - as much as 100 men can carry - push it in front of the cave, inside as well, and put fire to it."
And so, in this way, the wicked Raksasa himself became a tailless roasted.

in Bali we must point out a very important distinction which the Balinese make between two clearly separate groups of ancestors. The first of these groups consists of the dead who are riot yet completely purified. This group is in turn subdivided in pirata, those riot yet cremated, and pitara, those already cremated. The former are still completely impure; the latter have been purified, but are still considered as distinct, individual souls. The second group consists of the completely purified ancestors who are considered as divine.
No contact is sought with the pirata, the dead who have not yet been cremated. Oil the contrary they are dangerous, Offerings must however be made for the redemption of their souls.
