This made the Dutch finally sit up and take notice.

Dutch Versus The English
During the Napolenic Wars, when the East Indies was occupied briefly by the English, a British military mission was sent to Bali. Sir Stamford Raffles, who was to establish the colony of Singapore in 1819, visited in 1814. By 1836 rumors were circulating that the English were about to take possession of Bali to build a second Singapore. The Dutch. Believing that the English were intending to obtain control over the archipelago's rice trade began their own colonial adventure in Bali. To conceal a diplomatic offensive, at the end of 1837 The Hague decided that the Nederlandsche Handels Maatschappij or Dutch Trading Company (NHM) was to function as a political outpost on Bali and Lombok. The aim was to obtain exclusive contracts, which bound the rajas to Batavia, the Dutch capital in West Java. But because the NHM was not allowed to sell opium or weapons, the enterprise was economically disastrous. Ultimately the Dutch began directly involving themselves in Balinese internal affairs. They fomented discontent among the lesser, increasingly independent rajas in order to gain concessions; from the highest-ranking Dewa Agung of Klungkung.

Direct Action
In 1846, due to the shipwreck of a Dutch vessel on the Badung shores and its looting by the local population, the Dutch envoy threatened the raja with reprisals from Batavia. There were also several cases of looting (an ancient and accepted right of island peoples) of ships washed up on the northern coasts. When the Dutch resident went to Buleleng to investigate these cases and exchange contracts, he encountered a hostile and humiliating reception.
At the end of June 1846, the first Dutch punitive military expedition was launched against Buleleng--23 warships and some 3,000 men. With rifles and mortars, the soldiers fought all day against a Balinese force estimated at 50,000, armed with just spears and kris. Four hundred Balinese were killed, and the royal palace at Singaraja was destroyed. Within a few days a new treaty of submission was signed, the raja was forced to pay 400,000 guilders. and a Dutch garrison was stationed at Buleleng. But the war had just started. Political tension island, increased all over the island, which to the Dutch further military intervention.

in Bali we must point out a very important distinction which the Balinese make between two clearly separate groups of ancestors. The first of these groups consists of the dead who are riot yet completely purified. This group is in turn subdivided in pirata, those riot yet cremated, and pitara, those already cremated. The former are still completely impure; the latter have been purified, but are still considered as distinct, individual souls. The second group consists of the completely purified ancestors who are considered as divine.
No contact is sought with the pirata, the dead who have not yet been cremated. Oil the contrary they are dangerous, Offerings must however be made for the redemption of their souls.
