Miscellaneous

Miscellaneous: Bring reading material. Unless you swap, books are hard to come by on Bali. Shops and warungs in Kuta charge up to Rp2000 for old beat-up 2nd hand books jettisoned by former travelers. There's a bulletin board at Agen Pos, JI. Legian advertising for passengers on private boats, travel bargains, for-sale notices, yacht sales and crews, room and traveling mates, lost, found and stolen, all and everything. Many of the better known restaurants have bulletin boards as well, like Tama's, Poppies, etc. Massages cost Rp4-500 for adults, Rp150-200 for kids. Even the massage ladies speak English now. Bicycle rental is Rp200 per day (at Surata's) on Kuta Beach. Arak (palm gin) costs Rp200 a bottle in the market. Have letters addressed to Post Restante, Kuta Beach. This P.O. is on the road to Legian.
stay: There are literally hundreds of losmens, so many that no more are allowed to be built. Official prices are Rp single, Rp double. Also some beach front bungalows, Rp5000 for a twin bedroom with all facilities; unreal splendour. If you consider the sunsets, the restaurants, and the beach, Kuta is about the most comfortable place to stay in Indonesia. Lots of times you're waylaid at the airport or along the road and brought to a losmen on Kuta, this often turns out good. Some losmens offer rewards (Rp150) to their European boarders for each new customer they bring in. The nicest places are on the wings of Kuta village, just where it starts to get quiet again. These losmens tend to be lower priced, more relaxing, and there are fewer sellers. Each lane is actually a little neighborhood by itself, with its own eating warungs and strip of beach where the neighbourhood gathers at sunset. On the Legian village side of Kuta there are more kampungs, more trees and bushes, more life, more foodstalls and it's generally cheaper and closer to the sea. On the Kartika Plaza side there are only coconut groves, cows grazing, the losmens are further apart and more isolated. There are so many losmens now and so much competition that travelers are beginning to choose their losmen by the services and extras offered, i.e. if the family teaches silversmithing, dancing, Bahasa Indonesia, offers a bicycle, a bigger and better breakfast, or an outstanding collection of books to read. There's little spirit of neighborliness between losmen-owners where money is concerned. There's a lot of jealousy and many bad feelings when losmens 'lose' customers to their neighbors. Many losmens try. to buy a motorbike because there's more money in renting it out than they get for renting out rooms. During March and June, losmen prices drop from Rp600 to Rp500. south side of Kuta: Towards the airport, Petals Beach Inn is Rp600 or Rp1000 double. Komara Losmen, JI. Bakung Sari, Rp600 double, Rp400 single Losmen Pendawa is in back of Kartika Plaza, Rp600 single, Rp1000 double with private bath and shower; out of the way. Puspa Sari between Kartika Plaza and Sunset Inn, facing a beautiful courtyard and great old banyan tree; Rpl200, or Rp1000 per day if you stay a week. Surfboards and bicycles for hire on the same lane.. Kuta village: Three Brothers Losmen, two minutes walk back from airport-Kuta Beach road intersection, super beautiful garden, central, Rp400 single, Rp600 double. Losmen Artha, Rp400 and Rp600 double, including a Balinese breakfast (bubur with coconut), very nice place. For something more posh, Yasa Samudra's hotel is close to the beach at the end of Kuta Beach Road. Prime location. Cheap (Rp4500) for what you get; big breakfast included and delicious nasi gorengs only Rpl 10. East and West, also right on the beach, rents out bungalows from Rp400 (in the back) up to Rp2000-2500; a quiet relaxing place. Smack in the middle of Kuta behind the Bamboo Den is small, aMew and quiet Homestay Ibu Dewi; Rp400 or Rp666 double; so much in Kuta's eye it's hidden. No stealing, good vibes, and close to the dance rehearsal platform.Legian side: You'll find most of these losmens on the same lane as Poppies Cottages. Nyoman Gora, quiet and leafy. House Dewa, Santhi Graha, Pension Dua Dara, near Nyoman Gora; and especially good is Losmen Cempaka in its own kampung. Towards Kuta village, but all by itself, is Losmen Waringan, Rp400 and Rp600 double. Towards Legian about one km is Nyoman Jony 200 m from the beach. Further still is Lusa Accommodation, halfway between Kuta and Legian; it's only 75 m from the road and 50 m from the beach

in Bali we must point out a very important distinction which the Balinese make between two clearly separate groups of ancestors. The first of these groups consists of the dead who are riot yet completely purified. This group is in turn subdivided in pirata, those riot yet cremated, and pitara, those already cremated. The former are still completely impure; the latter have been purified, but are still considered as distinct, individual souls. The second group consists of the completely purified ancestors who are considered as divine.
No contact is sought with the pirata, the dead who have not yet been cremated. Oil the contrary they are dangerous, Offerings must however be made for the redemption of their souls.
