Southwest

SOUTHWEST Buntupune: 2 km. An old traditional village.Mandoe: 6 km, right off the main highway. Guesthouse. One km from Mandoe at Alang Alang there's good fishing from the bridge.Salu: 15 km. There are good places to swim near a bamboo bridge over the river flowing through this village. Siguntu: A traditional, seldom visited village. Nice rice barns and a great view looking out towards Singki and Rantepao (although you can't actually see Rantepao).SOUTH:Dulang: 8 km. Old graves, tau tau (statues).Pa'baisenan: 8 km. Graves of children in a large tree. If a child dies before teething, his coffin is hung in a tree.Singki Hill: In the south part of Rantepao. Turn 100 m after the crossroads and just head for the big rock. A short but precipitous climb. See the whole of Rantepao from the top.EAST :Marante: 6 km. A very typical Torajan village with graves and old statues.Nanggala: 15 km. 14 traditional rice barns, the best you'll see. Besides serving the function of storing rice (on the 2nd floor), these buildings are also used for ceremonies. Guests are received on the first floor. They'll ask for a donation.Tandung: 17 km. A most spectacular area with pine forests, 18 m high bamboo, and a gorgeous lake.NORTH:Bori: A good rante (circle of megaliths) place for funeral ceremonies.Palawa': 9 km. An old village.Pangli: 7 km. A stone statue here has the likeness of a dead man, one Pong Massangka, carved on it. Parinding: 7 km. Old houses. Nice walk to here and back to Rantepao.Sa'dan: A village and weaving center. Go past the woman in the first house on the right after the bridge. Her prices for cloth are nearly the same as in Rantepao and she'll even try to charge you for looking at a loom. Go instead 2 km uphill to Tenun where you can actually see the weavers at work. They'll bring out the real old fabrics, shawls, and family heirlooms. Bargain as if you don't want it (even if you do).

in Bali we must point out a very important distinction which the Balinese make between two clearly separate groups of ancestors. The first of these groups consists of the dead who are riot yet completely purified. This group is in turn subdivided in pirata, those riot yet cremated, and pitara, those already cremated. The former are still completely impure; the latter have been purified, but are still considered as distinct, individual souls. The second group consists of the completely purified ancestors who are considered as divine.
No contact is sought with the pirata, the dead who have not yet been cremated. Oil the contrary they are dangerous, Offerings must however be made for the redemption of their souls.
